King Dasaratha

In this magnificent and aptly named¹ capital city of Ayodhya lived King Dasaratha—a master of the Vedas, far-sighted, and deeply respected by city-dwellers and country folk alike. A formidable chariot warrior of the Ikshvaku lineage, he was celebrated as a "royal sage."

Just as the legendary Manu once guarded this land, Dasaratha stood as its steadfast guardian; faithful to his vows and the three major goals of life: Dharma, Artha, and Kama. Devoted to righteousness, Dasaratha rivaled Shakra (Indra) in splendor and Vaishravana (Kubera) in wealth.

Within this city dwelt contented citizens; not a single inhabitant suffered from a scarcity of food or grain. Ignorance and avarice were unknown within Ayodhya's borders. Its populace displayed exemplary character, adorned in fine ornaments, fragrant scents, and splendid armlets.

The priestly class remained resolute in its sacred duties, having mastered its senses and committed itself to lifelong study of the scriptures. They exercised profound conscientiousness when accepting gifts.

Overall, during this golden age of Ayodhya, no one lacked prosperity, and every inhabitant remained fiercely devoted to their beloved King Dasaratha.

Put together, A-yodhya literally means: "A place that cannot be conquered by war."
